🌟Coach Spotlight 🌟

Meet Coach Sheila from James A. Farley Elementary School in Rockland County, NY

How many seasons have you coached?
“I’ve coached for two seasons, and spring 2025 will be my third."

What motivated you to get involved as a coach?
“What motivated me to get involved as a coach was learning about the program and falling in love with its mission, which aligns closely with many of my own values. I also realized how much I would have benefited from a program like this when I was a kid, and I wanted to offer the same opportunity to girls who could truly benefit from it.”

What are some of the most rewarding moments you’ve experienced as a Girls on the Run coach?
“One of the most rewarding moments I've experienced as a Girls on the Run coach is seeing the lasting connections I build with the girls. It's incredibly fulfilling to watch them grow throughout the season. Additionally, just as rewarding is seeing the new friendships they form with each other within the team. I love observing how these girls not only connect but also nurture and maintain their relationships long after the program ends.”

Can you share a story about how the program has positively impacted a participant (a girl, parent, or volunteer)?
“One participant joined the team feeling shy and disconnected, especially since she was new to the school. However, as the season progressed, I saw her confidence and self-esteem grow. She formed new friendships and became more engaged with the group. By the end, she shared how the program helped her feel more confident and connected, which was incredibly rewarding to see. ”

What do you enjoy most about being a coach for Girls on the Run?
“What I enjoy most about being a coach for Girls on the Run is watching the girls develop valuable skills that not only boost their self-esteem and confidence in the present, but also lay a foundation for their future. These skills help them build strong friendships, stay physically active, and improve their mental health. It’s truly amazing to witness their growth in these areas, and I feel grateful to be part of their journey.”

What advice would you give to new coaches just starting out with Girls on the Run?
“If you're unsure whether coaching is the right fit for you, I’d say give it a try! You might be surprised by how rewarding and fulfilling it can be. Sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone is the best way to discover a passion you didn’t know you had.”
